It takes a lot more than an impressive resume to land a job at Amazon. Even in Amazon's early years, founder and CEO Jeff Bezos was fastidious about hiring the strongest employees possible. And while it's unlikely that today Bezos is doing the interviewing himself, in his 1998 letter to shareholders he outlined three key questions for leaders to consider before hiring new employees to ensure that Amazon would retain its high standards. Those questions: 1) “Will you admire this person?” 2) “Will this person raise the average level of effectiveness of the group they’re entering?” 3) “Along what dimension might this person be a superstar?″ How should you answer these questions in an interview? Morgan Stanley doubled its long-term valuation estimate for Elon Musk’s SpaceX on Thursday and is now expecting the company to be worth at least $100 billion due to its position in the growing space industry. “SpaceX continues to solidify its place as ‘mission control’ for the emerging space economy. Important milestones with Starlink, Starship and government contracts dovetail to support an increase in our base case valuation,” Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jones wrote in a note to investors. The firm’s new valuation expectation is twice its previous estimate in July, but SpaceX has passed a number of milestones in that time, including returning its first NASA astronauts from space successfully, winning hundreds of millions of dollars in Pentagon contracts, and conducting two test flights of its next-generation Starship rocket. In Morgan Stanley’s base case, SpaceX’s rockets business reaches an $11.7 billion valuation while its Starlink satellite internet business grows to $80.9 billion, and the company adds point-to-point space travel as an $8.7 billion value. Full story at the link in bio.

Our journey to fully understanding our purpose and value in life — or achieving "self-mastery" — begins the second we are born. It requires a commitment to building patience, discipline and self-awareness. Shi Heng Yi, a Shaolin master, spent nearly 30 years studying and practicing the interaction between mind and body. This is an essential part of the Shaolin martial arts culture and philosophy, dating back to more than 1,500 years. According to him, one of the most important teachings is the "five hindrances of self-mastery." These are the core mental states that prevent us from seeing clearly, making smart decisions, achieving our goals and living a happier, more harmonious life. 1. Sensual desire, or intertwined pleasure. Sensual desires aren't always bad, but any desire (healthy or unhealthy) can easily turn into an obsession or addiction that distracts us from our goals. The only way to truly fight a temptation is to think deeply and carefully about the eventual consequences of succumbing to it. For the four other hindrances and how to overcome them, click the link in bio.

Mark Cuban wakes up at 6:30 a.m. every day. What’s the first thing he does? “I’ll grab a phone and start going through my email,” the billionaire says. “Whatever the stressful things are, I try to get those out of the way in the morning.” In any given day, Cuban estimates, he spends three to four hours reading through and responding to emails. But he says he doesn’t mind: “I get 700 emails a day. You may think that’s a lot, but you know what I’d rather do? I’d rather do 700, even 1,000 or more emails than sit in long and tedious and boring meetings.” Read more about Cuban’s daily routine at the link in bio. (With @CNBCMakeIt)

Just as 5G arrives on planet Earth, its predecessor is heading to the moon. 🌕 NASA has selected Nokia to build the first-ever 4G mobile network on Earth’s natural satellite, the telecommunications firm announced earlier this week. The company’s U.S. industrial research arm, Bell Labs, is offering up its equipment to NASA to help build out the lunar network, with the aim of launching it in late 2022. Under its Artemis program, NASA plans to send astronauts to the moon by 2024 — for the first time in five decades — followed by a “sustainable” human presence by 2028. Nokia says its 4G network will allow astronauts to carry out a number of activities including making voice and video calls, sending important data and deploying payloads. It plans to eventually launch 5G on the moon as well. Full story at the link in bio.

In the lead-up to one of the most divisive election campaigns in U.S. history, the media and campaign strategists are fixated on the most highly-sought after data available this time of year: polling numbers. Kevin O’Leary, meanwhile, says they’re basically useless. “I would tell our viewers right now to remember one thing — and I speak as an investor,” O’Leary said. “Researchers and pollsters do not know what’s going on anymore,” he said, recounting a time when he paid for research on Brexit ahead of the U.K.’s vote to leave the EU that convinced him to place long bets on the British pound and the euro — and that turned out to be completely wrong. “You can’t use polls to determine outcomes,” he said. “They’re irrelevant.” But, O’Leary’s says, “The markets are trading on a stimulus-based market regardless of who runs the White House,” which he sees as “very positive.” Full story at the link in bio.

There are two very simple, universally valuable resources: Time and money. Unsurprisingly, most people focus too much on working and making money, and not enough on having more time. But shifting your mindset to prioritize time over money can have several benefits. Studies show that those with a time-centric mindset have higher levels of happiness, better social connections, healthier relationships, and greater job satisfaction. Research shows that after we make enough money to pay our bills and save for the future, making more does little for our happiness. If anything, once people start making a lot of money, they begin to think they’re doing worse in life, because they become obsessed with comparing themselves to those who are richer. Even multimillionaires make the mistake of believing that money, and not time, will enrich their lives. Focusing on chasing wealth is a trap, because it leads only to an increased focus on chasing wealth. Click the link in bio to learn how to break out of this mindset. (With @CNBCMakeIt)

A top official at the CDC said this week that the agency is seeing a “distressing trend” in the United States’ coronavirus outbreak. Jay Butler, the CDC’s deputy director for infectious diseases, said Covid-19 cases are now growing “really in all parts of the country,” with particularly high transmission in the Midwest. “Unfortunately, we are seeing a distressing trend here in the United States,” he told reporters on a call. He said the surge is likely due to the arrival of cooler temperatures, adding, “Smaller, more intimate gatherings of family, friends and neighbors may be driving transmission as well, especially as they move indoors.” The U.S. is now reporting roughly 60,000 new Covid-19 cases daily, growing nearly 17% compared with a week ago. The U.S. still has the worst outbreak in the world, with more than 8.2 million cases and at least 221,122 deaths. Health officials and infectious disease experts fear the situation could become dire as flu season begins and hospitals risk reaching capacity. Full story at the link in bio.

Looking for a (long) getaway? The Italian hilltop village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio is hoping to attract new younger residents by offering them grants totaling as much as 44,000 euros ($52,022). Santo Stefano currently only has 115 residents, 41 of which are over the age of 65, while just 13 people living in the village are under 20 years old. The local council said, therefore, it was “essential” to do something to ensure “a sustainable and lasting development of the territory." It devised the initiative to attract new residents, which included offering a maximum grant of 8,000 euros a year for three years, paid monthly. It said it would offer another grant, a one-off maximum payment of 20,000 euros, for new residents to start a business. Details at the link in bio. (With @CNBCMakeIt)

Some countries across the globe are on “a dangerous track” in the coronavirus pandemic and hospitals are beginning to reach capacity ahead of the Northern Hemisphere’s winter season, the head of the WHO said Friday. “We are at a critical juncture in this pandemic, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. The next few months are going to be very tough and some countries are on a dangerous track,” said Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a press briefing. Discovered in late December, Covid-19 has spread to more than 41.8 million people across the globe, taking more than 1.1 million lives so far, shuttering businesses and devastating economies from the U.S. to Asia. WHO officials warned last week that coronavirus outbreaks in Europe have become “concerning.” In the U.S., outbreaks taking hold in the Midwest have also led to a significant spike in new Covid-19 cases. More details at the link in bio.

Who do you think won Thursday's debate? According to Republican pollster and strategist Frank Luntz, President Donald Trump won the final debate against Democrat Joe Biden, but that’s not going to be enough to get him reelected. “You got to give Trump a minor victory because he’ll bring some [undecided] voters home, and it’ll close the race a little bit. But in the end, I think Joe Biden won the war,” Luntz said, predicting that Trump, with 11 days until the Nov. 3 election and more than 47 million votes already cast, does not have enough time to overcome Biden’s national and swing state polling leads. Luntz said that even if the polls are wrong, as they were in 2016 when Trump pulled off an upset victory over Hillary Clinton, it’s “virtually impossible” for the president to win. Luntz noted that polls four years ago were only off a few points but Biden’s lead in the 2020 race is wide enough to overcome any margin of error. Full story at the link in bio.
