@RuthOssaistudio is one of the artists featured in the #PhotoVogueFestival 2020’s exhibit “IN THE PICTURE: Shifting perspectives in fashion photography”. ‘Fashion’ photography does not have to be inaccessible...untouchable...unattainable... (as I felt this growing up), it can also be the everyday and imperfect, while filling subject(s) with power and agency, which is a common fundamental core throughout myself, Camila Falquez, Nadine Ijewere and Alexandra von Fuerst’s work.” says the artist. “It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be for a certain 'type' of person/class/demographic nor does it perpetuate elitist culture within fashion imagery. My personal photographs of family and friends curated for In the picture give total control to my subjects over how they portray themselves whether it be through choices in their own personal style, backdrops and poses, whilst not creating pressure so they can be free and allow their true self to shine through comfortably in my images.” About the artist - Nigerian-British photographer Ruth Ginika Ossai grew up between South-Eastern Nigeria and Yorkshire. Ossai’s personal photographs celebrate identity, particularly Nigerian identity and culture, shooting Ossai’s friends and family at and away from home. Using her makeshift studio with colourful backdrops inspired by Nollywood films (Igbo and Yoruba) to create collaborative storytelling with her subjects, that are fun, playful, strong and unapologetically so, filling her subjects with power and agency. @NadineIjewere is one of the artists featured in the #PhotoVogueFestival 2020’s exhibit “IN THE PICTURE: Shifting perspectives in fashion photography”. “Growing up I never really saw anyone that looked like me within fashion.” says the artist. “The Western world is very diverse and fashion and beauty did not reflect that. Fashion photography has enabled me to celebrate different types of beauty and backgrounds and go against the stereotypes of beauty ideals.” About the artist - Nadine Ijewere is a south-east London born photographer. Her work focuses primarily on the subject of identity and diversity, informed by her own Nigerian / Jamaican background. She is drawn to non-traditional faces with the aim of showcasing a new standard of beauty and giving life to the uniqueness of disparate cultures. While at school, Nadine took up photography among her more academic subjects. But she found herself drawn to the creative side and went on to study photography at UAL’s London College of Fashion. Leaving college, she went straight into taking her own pictures, crediting social media with helping her to establish relationships with collaborators including stylist Ibrahim Kamara, casting models from Instagram, and enabling her to gradually build her reputation. In 2016 Ijewere’s work was featured in The Tate Britain Generation exhibition and at Unseen Amsterdam and Logos Photo Festival in 2017. She was the recipient of the ICP Applied award in 2020. @CamilaFalquez is one of the artists featured in the #PhotoVogueFestival 2020’s exhibit “IN THE PICTURE: Shifting perspectives in fashion photography”. “Fashion photography has a huge responsibility, It works with the aspirations of society.” says the artist. “Shifting what to aspire to, who is included in the definitions of beauty, giving space for silenced voices to own their dignity and regalness; is what I believe should be shown in the images we produce. The work of the four of us is in a constant dialogue, opening the space and giving safety for the other (and all the many others creating work today) to keep going. If they can do it, so can I.” About the artist - Camila Falquez has been an immigrant her whole life, born from Colombian parents in Mexico city, they moved to Spain when she was a kid, and for the past 9 years has been living in New York. Falquez is socially conscious and aware of the immense reach of fashion imagery and believes in channeling that longing in new directions that are healthier and more inclusive. She has developed her own visual language, merging a personal form of surrealism with a distinctive colour palette & empowering gaze. @AlexandraVonFuerst is one of the artists featured in the #PhotoVogueFestival 2020’s exhibit “IN THE PICTURE: Shifting perspectives in fashion photography”. "The exhibition created is to me a result of a dialogue expressing a profound wish for fashion to become a space of understanding and acceptance in the representation of a process of growth towards social, political, environmental and sexual freedom.” says the artist. “Uncategorised and empowered, each artist is bringing a new form of freedom to the table, making this exchange a truly exciting one! I feel lucky being born in a generation of transformation, shifting perspectives into new directions, in which fashion exists not only as a style but more importantly as a channel for universal change. It is through the combination of fashion and photography in fact that political and social reality comes to term with beauty and it is in this union that power is created in my opinion. Change through beauty, in a prism of possibilities and points of view, without constraints nor categories. The interaction coming from different experiences and backgrounds was to me a mind opening project, sharing a goal of pure empowerment towards a sustainable future for all cultures alike." About the artist - Born in 1992, Alexandra grew up in Italy, graduating in photography in Milan in 2014. Starting from a focus on female sexuality and awareness, her work challenges perceptions of identity and reality to recreate understanding in modern philosophy, questioning the impact of human action on the relationship between body and nature. “IN THE PICTURE: Shifting perspectives in fashion photography” is one of the exhibitions of the next edition of #PhotoVogueFestival 2020 featuring @AlexandraVonFuerst, @CamilaFalquez, @NadineIjewere & @RuthOssaiStudio. They are all “contemporary socially conscious fashion photographers”, part of a new generation of artists whose aesthetics is intrinsically a hybrid of genres: in their images, fashion engages in a constant dialogue with visual arts and journalism, as well as with an introjected need to balance out the various levels of representation. The work of Camila, Nadine, Alexandra and Ruth, is imbued with issues of gender, race, womanhood, without ever being didactic or redundant - on the contrary, it is glamorous, vibrant and powerful. For PVF 2020, we decided to give space to their vision, initiating a 4-way dialogue where the artists are not only the protagonists of the exhibition but also its curators. The photographs in the exhibition, as well as the sequencing and main themes explored are therefore the result of a collaborative creation between Alexandra, Camila, Nadine and Ruth, through zoom calls, whatsapp chats and shared dropbox folders. A never seen before platform will host exhibitions, talks and projections and as every edition, the Festival will be a unique opportunity for those interested in photography, fashion and art. Photo Vogue Festival 2020: @Mhammed_Kilito is one of the artists selected for the upcoming ALL IN THIS TOGETHER exhibition curated by @AlessiaGlaviano and @Maranif. The project on display is titled “Among You”. “This project reflects the choices around personal identity for Moroccan youth. Through a selection of portraits, I document young people who take their destinies into their own hands. These individuals have the courage to choose their own realities, often pushing the limits of society further. Whether through their creative activities, their appearance, or their sexuality, they convey the image of a young Morocco - alert, changing, claiming the right to be different and celebrating diversity.” says the artist. “These young people, whose minds embody the resistance of a palm tree - a tree adapted to the harshest Moroccan climatic conditions - defy the conservative and traditional norms of Moroccan society on a daily basis. They cultivate their private oasis despite the obstacles they encounter in a country that they feel is not progressing at the same pace as they are, and they are inspiring others along the way.” About the artist - M'hammed Kilito (b. 1981, Russia) is an independent Moroccan photographer based in Rabat, Morocco. He is represented internationally by Native Agency and is a co-founder and a photographer of KOZ collective. He holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from Ottawa University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Montreal. As a documentary photographer, he addresses issues relating to cultural identity and the human condition in Morocco. Photo Vogue Festival 2020: @LuisAlbertoRodriguezStudio is one of the artists selected for the upcoming ALL IN THIS TOGETHER exhibition curated by @AlessiaGlaviano and @Maranif. The project on display is titled “The People of the Mud”. “While residing in the rural village of Rathnure in Wexford, Ireland, I was to create a body of work focusing on Irish cultural heritage in correlation with the EU platform FUTURES.” says the artist. “During my stay, I came in contact and in conversation with a way of life very different from my own, Farming. I was inspired to learn the inhabitants I came across were descendants of people who had lived on the same land for generations. Using common farming tools as well as domestic items, I honed in on how the body is not separate from the necessities needed to create sustainable living conditions. The body and tools – seen as one machine, not independent from each other, but rather forming an alliance; a unit for survival. I have chosen to title the series, "The People of The Mud". Wexford, founded by the Vikings, was originally named Veisafjǫrðr, meaning "inlet of the mud flats". The title being a nod to heritage and continuance. Mud is the mixing of two primal elements: earth and water. It is not static and is constantly taking shape depending on the physical echo with which it is impregnated. About the artist - Luis Alberto Rodriguez is a self taught photographer whose work has been featured in various exhibitions and publications around the world. In 2017, Rodriguez won both the Prix de Public and the American Vintage prize at the 32nd Hyeres Festival of Fashion and Photography. In Spring of 2018, Rodriguez was featured as one of Red Hook Labs New Artists. In the fall of 2018, he was awarded a residency at Cow House Studios in Wexford Ireland in collaboration with FUTURES and Photo Ireland. Photo Vogue Festival 2020: @LeonardSuryajaya is one of the artists selected for the upcoming ALL IN THIS TOGETHER exhibition curated by @AlessiaGlaviano and @Maranif. Leonard Suryajaya uses photography to test the boundaries of intimacy, community, and family. His works show how the everyday is layered with histories, meanings, and potential. Many of Leonard’s investigations are rooted in the particularity of his upbringing as an Indonesian citizen of Chinese descent, as a Buddhist educated in Christian schools in a Muslim-majority country, and as someone who departed from his family and his culture’s definitions of love and family. Leonard explores these tensions in the everyday interaction, in the chance juxtaposition of culturally-coded objects, and in the disruptions stirred by queer relations. His works perform the ways in which life is soaked not just with one’s own emotional connections but larger, external histories of exile, religion, citizenship, duty, and belonging. His photographs work cumulatively to establish narratives, and he combines these images with videos that document family histories, that play out fantasies, that test group dynamics, or that use the format of the interview to turn his sitters’ gaze back upon his role as artist and facilitator. In all of these, we feel the push and pull of allegiance and autonomy in every odd detail that his works retain as reminders. About the artist - Leonard Suryajaya (Chicago, IL) uses his work to test the boundaries of intimacy, community and family. He uses photography, video, performance and installation to show how the everyday is layered with histories, meanings and potential.
